About this policy
This Privacy Policy covers the Aether mobile app and aetherweather.live (the “Services”). Aether Weather is the independent project operating them. For privacy questions or requests, write to [email protected].
What the Services handle
Location and selected places
If you allow location access in the app, it uses your device’s location to find a local forecast. If you tap “Use my location” on the website, your browser asks for permission and sends coordinates to our website weather endpoint. You can decline permission and choose a city instead. The app also handles place names you search for and cities you save.
A random installation identifier
The app creates a random identifier on your device and sends it with requests to the Aether weather and AI gateway. The gateway uses a protected hash of that identifier for rate limits and operational records. It is not an account, and we do not use it for advertising.
Optional AI questions
When you type a question for Aether AI, the question and relevant forecast context are sent through our gateway to Google Gemini to produce a response. Preset, on-device answers may work without sending a typed question. The gateway does not store the text of your chat question or the AI reply in its database or logs.
Technical and contact information
Our hosting providers process request data such as IP address, browser or device details, and timestamps to deliver and secure the Services. If you email us, we receive your address and message so we can respond.
How we use it
We use the information above to show local forecasts and air quality, search and remember places, provide optional AI guidance, keep the Services working, limit abusive or excessive requests, and answer support messages. We do not sell personal information or use the Services for targeted advertising.
Where location goes
The app normally sends coordinates to the Aether gateway over HTTPS. The gateway converts them to an approximate location cell of about 1.7 km before caching weather data or requesting it from Open-Meteo. It does not store the precise coordinates in its database. If the gateway is unavailable, the app can request weather directly from Open-Meteo, which then receives the coordinates needed for that request. City search terms go to Open-Meteo’s geocoding service.
On the website, choosing a preset city sends that city’s coordinates to a Cloudflare Pages Function. If you explicitly share browser location, the function rounds the coordinates to two decimal places before requesting a forecast from MET Norway. The website does not store a location history or link these forecast requests to an account.
Where information is kept
The app keeps saved and recent cities, a small number of recent forecasts and AI daily briefings, and its random installation identifier in device storage. Chat messages are held in the current app session rather than saved as a server chat history. You can remove local data by clearing the app’s storage or uninstalling it.
Our gateway caches approximate-cell forecasts for up to 6 hours, air quality for up to 12 hours, and generated daily briefings for up to 12 hours. It automatically deletes hashed chat-limit records and location-cell usage records after about 2 days, and provider call records after about 30 days. Those call records contain status and short error codes, not message text, raw coordinates, or raw installation IDs. Hosting and service providers may keep their own security or access records under their policies.
Who helps provide Aether
- Cloudflare hosts the website and Aether gateway and processes technical requests and cached data.
- Open-Meteo supplies app forecasts, air quality, and city search. Air quality data includes Copernicus information served through Open-Meteo.
- MET Norway supplies the website’s live weather preview.
- Google Gemini processes typed AI questions and weather context when you use that optional feature.
- Google Fonts serves fonts to the website; your browser contacts Google when loading them.
- Email providers process messages you send to our contact address.
These providers may process information under their own privacy terms. We share only what is needed for the feature you use or where law requires it.
Control and deletion
You can refuse or revoke device or browser location permission, choose a city manually, avoid the optional AI feature, remove saved cities, or clear the app’s local data. Aether does not currently require an account. To ask about access, correction, or deletion of information we control, email [email protected]. Because server records use hashed installation identifiers and are not tied to accounts, we may not be able to identify a particular record without additional information; the short-lived records expire automatically.
Protection and retention
Network requests to our Services use HTTPS. The gateway hashes the app’s random installation identifier before storing it and avoids storing raw chat text or precise location in its database. No online service can guarantee absolute security, but we work to limit the data kept and who can access it.
Cookies and analytics
We do not currently install an advertising or third-party analytics script on this website. Cloudflare may use essential technical measures to operate and protect the site, and Google Fonts receives normal browser requests when fonts load. If these practices change, we will update this policy.
Keeping this policy current
Aether is a general-audience weather service and is not designed specifically for children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us. We may update this policy as the product or its providers change. The current version and effective date will always be shown here.
